Members of the public paying personal tributes
tribute to the British and Commonwealth military service people who contributed
in the two world wars and later conflicts. In all major towns and cities,
services were being held; and in Windsor a service was held outside the St.
John the Baptist Church, before resuming rest of the service inside.
People started gathering for the service after 10 am,
finding their place on the pavement, opposite the church. Civic dignitaries,
ex-service people, members of the local armed forces, military cadet forces and
youth organisations joined in just before the service began. The service began with
everybody singing the national anthem. There were few words from the minister,
who put a fitting tribute to those who sacrificed their lives.
'They shall grow not
old as we that are left grow old: Age shall not weary them, nor the years
condemn. At the going down of the sun and in the morning we will remember them.'
After a two minutes silence, Mayor of Royal Borough of
Windsor and Maidenhead, Cllr Asghar Majeed was called to lay down an official
poppy wreath, who was then followed by representatives of organisations that were
present there. The rest of the service was resumed inside the church. The crowd
dispersed, with some paying private tributes where the official poppy wreaths
were laid.
