Windsor witnesses the Big Freeze

Windsor had witnessed snow for the first time this year on
this weekend. On a Saturday, a frosty bitter weather set a prelude to the snow
that arrived in the evening. This winter is one of the harshest winters Europe
has seen. There have been reports in the news about the number of lives being lost
due to extreme weather. Five people have died in France, including a 12 year
old boy who contracted hypothermia after falling into a frozen pond. In Poland,
death toll has reached to 53. In Hungary, at least 5 people have died. In
Ukraine, 30 people have died. In all, death toll from European cold has reached
over 280.
It could get worse as heavy snow is being anticipated in
Spain and the Pyrenees. In Britain, chaos and delays on the M25 and airports
have been criticised and begged a question on why Britain had been unprepared
for snow again. There had been warnings of snow for weeks and yet public found
themselves stranded for up to 10 hours on the motorway because of snow.
Heathrow cancelled one third of its flights on Sunday because of snow and low
visibility due to fog. Northbound M1 was closed between junction 14 at Milton
Keynes and junction 15 at Northampton due to an accident. Dozens of motorists
abandoned their vehicles on the M25 due to long delays in the snow.
People are being advised to take extra care when they go out
as the Big Freeze is expected to stick around for a while.
