GCSE pupils achieve second highest percentage in country

A total of 97.5% of Royal Borough GCSE pupils achieved five or more A* to G grades, including English and maths, in the summer exams – the highest figure in England with the exception of the Isles of Scilly (with only 22 pupils).

A delighted Cllr Eileen Quick, lead member for children's services, said: “This fantastic news means almost all our pupils are completing KS4 with a basic set of qualifications, including English and maths.”

Other borough highlights from the report on GCSE and equivalent results in England for 2009/10 (statistical first release), just released by the Department for Education, include:

63.1% of pupils achieved five or more A* to C grades, including English and maths. This ranks the borough 13th among all local authorities in the country, with boys 10th nationally on 61.1% and girls 19th (65.3%).

These A* to C grades results are 2% higher than the average, 61.1%, of our statistical neighbours – similar local authorities across the country.

They are also a full 6% above the average for the South East – 57.1% – and 8.2% above the 54.9% average of all local authority maintained schools in England. The average for comprehensive schools is 50.9% for boys, 57.9% for girls and 54.4% overall.

Cllr Quick added: “These excellent results are testament to the children’s hard work and credit to their teachers, staff, parents and school governors who have so diligently taught and supported them in their efforts.
