Volunteers are being sought from across the borough to fill vacancies at primary and secondary schools as governors eventually decide to step down.
Cllr Eileen Quick, lead member for children’s services, said: “Governors play a key role in determining how a school operates and provides the best educational opportunities for all the pupils.
“They work with the teaching staff who have educational expertise. What governors bring to the mix is a perspective from outside the school gates, an understanding of their community’s needs and a desire to create an environment where children and young people can thrive.”
Governors oversee the school budget and curriculum and are involved in appointing staff. They work with the school management team to develop all the learning opportunities that pupils experience including spiritual, moral, social and cultural development, and need to keep abreast of national and local initiatives and make any necessary adjustments to the curriculum.
Cllr Quick added: “We are not looking for experts, just everyday people who want to contribute towards the success of our schools. Being a school governor is a very worthwhile and rewarding experience.”
Applications to become a school governor can be made by completing an online form at www.rbwm.gov.uk/web/ed_gov_becoming_gov.htm. Alternatively, or for further information, call governors' services on 01628 796960 or email governors@rbwm.gov.uk
