The new outdoor gym that's shaped like the Olympics logo has finally found a new home.
The £150,000 AdiZone outdoor gym, in the shape of the 2012 Olympics logo, will provide residents with a free exercise facility for all fitness levels and leave Maidenhead with a lasting legacy of the games.
Braywick Park has been approved by grant funder and Olympics sponsor Adidas and the initiative welcomed by the Braywick Users Group.
Plans are now being drawn up to start construction in mid-October with the gym expected to be completed before Christmas.
The original venue, Town Moor, was rejected after a consultation with residents saw an even split between those supporting the installation and those objecting.
A number of alternative sites were proposed by the council, including Laggan Field and Oaken Grove, with Braywick being the sponsors’ preferred choice because of its convenient location close to the town centre.
The gym, to be located alongside the new play area near the athletics track, will include an 18-station gym, basketball area, football goal, tennis wall, climbing wall with murals of famous Olympians and a freestyle area to encourage dance, gymnastics and aerobics.
Cllr Simon Dudley, lead member for adult and community services, said: “This is an exciting development for Maidenhead sport.
“Braywick is a hub of physical activity and the AdiZone is sure to be a popular addition as it will be free to use and is designed for exercisers of all ages and abilities.
“It should also hopefully further boost Braywick’s chances of renewing its prestigious Green Flag status next year.”
A number of AdiZones, which are match-funded by grant and local money, have already been installed in London. Maidenhead is one of the first boroughs outside the capital to get grant funding.
